First Sellable Product

Updated over 4 months ago

Products are the beating heart of Douano. Here you create all products, ranging from raw materials to containers and finished goods. You will use these products in various processes such as purchasing, sales, production, etc.

πŸ’‘ We will now focus on creating your first sellable product. In the Products module, you will learn more about all product types.

In this guide, we’ll use as an example a blond beer, Douano Blond, which we sell in crates of 24 bottles of 33cl. For this, we need to create the following products:

  • Beer: the actual beer you are going to sell.

  • Beverage packaging/container: the beer is sold in bottles of 33cl, for example.

  • Simple product: the bottle needs a label and crown cap and is sold in a crate.

  • Composite product: we combine everything into one final product:

    • Blond beer in a 33cl bottle;

    • A crate of 24 bottles of blond beer.

πŸ’‘ Apply this step-by-step plan to a beer that you sell yourself. This way, you will immediately have your first correct products set up.

πŸ’‘ Of course, you can apply this plan to any type of beverage you sell.

Beverage

β‡’ Go to Products – Products and click the green plus sign.

In the General Information block, select the product type you want to create. There are many product types for beverages: beers, wines, fruit juices, spirits... In this example, we’ll start with a beer.

⚠️ Important! Make sure to select the correct product type right away. You cannot change a product’s type afterward. For beverages, specific information must be filled in to correctly link excise registrations. So be sure to select the correct type immediately.

πŸ’‘ The explanation for the other fields can be found in this πŸ‘‰ guide.

Beverage Packaging / Container

πŸ’‘ By beverage packaging/containers, we mean the packaging in which the drink is directly contained, such as bottles, cans, kegs/barrels...

πŸ’‘ We distinguish between Belgian and Dutch customers, because in Belgium an eco-tax applies to certain types of beverage packaging.

Belgian customers

πŸ’‘ Bottles and cans are containers with an eco-tax.
πŸ’‘ Kegs, both stainless steel and plastic disposable kegs, are almost always containers without eco-tax.

In our example, we use a 33cl glass bottle, which has an eco-tax.

β‡’ Go to Products – Products and click the green plus sign. In the General data block, select Container with eco-tax as the product type.

πŸ’‘ The explanation for the other fields can be found in this πŸ‘‰ guide.

Dutch customers

β‡’ Go to Products – Products and click the green plus sign. In the General Information block, select Container as the product type.

πŸ’‘ The explanation for the other fields can be found in this πŸ‘‰ guide.

Simple Product

πŸ’‘ Simple products are components, often a single part, that will eventually form part of a finished product. Examples: crown caps, labels, crates, boxes...

β‡’ Go to Products – Products and click the green plus sign. In the General Information block, select Simple product as the product type.

πŸ’‘ The explanation for the other fields can be found in this πŸ‘‰ guide.

Composite Product

πŸ’‘ Composite products are finished products that are typically sold to customers. These composite products consist of several simple products.

You have now created all the products for a beer bottle: beer, bottle, crown cap, and label(s). You will now combine these into one product, for example: Douano Blond 33cl.

β‡’ Go to Products – Products and click the green plus sign. In the General Information block, select Composite product as the product type.

In the Specific Information (composite) block, add the products you have created line by line:

  • The beverage in liters, e.g., 0.33 liter

  • The beverage container: 1 piece

  • The crown cap: 1 piece

  • The label: 1 piece

πŸ’‘ The explanation for the other fields can be found in this πŸ‘‰ guide.

πŸ’‘ It is also possible to create composites of composites, such as a beer crate with 24 bottles, where the bottles themselves are also a composite product.

πŸ’‘ The crate x number of bottles, box x number of bottles, etc., should first be created as a simple product.

For this composition, select in the Specific Information (composite) block the following products:

  • The crate 24x33cl: 1 piece

  • Bottle of beer 33cl: 24 pieces
